The book is narrated by the present-day Dini as he looks back at a time when he was professionally successful but isolated from the world, drinking too much and struggling to connect with others after a childhood of living inside his own head. Dini bares his soul on the page and paints a less than flattering depiction of his life circa-1993. It goes without saying that Dark Night is a very emotionally powerful read. So this graphic novel is less about Batman as a character and more about the idea of Batman and the hope he can inspire in those most hopeless moments. In addition to the physical toll the attack took on him, Dini struggled with the psychological aftermath and the challenge of continuing to write about Batman and his villains. In 1993, he was brutally attacked and left for dead near his West Hollywood home. Dark Night is an autobiographical story about a particularly troubled period in Dini's life.
